Top Value Added Boarding Schools
2010

The league table below shows the top 50 boarding schools (England only) as measured by their added value performance. These results were published by the UK Government’s Department of Children, Families and Schools and indicate how a school has improved its pupils’ achievements over a given period. The school inspection body, OFSTED, says that their contextual value added scores are the best measure of a school’s educational quality. The table shows which schools make a difference to their pupils’ performance by teaching standards, as opposed to those who simply select the brightest pupils for admission. It is more of a measure of how a school can improve a pupil’s academic performance in the sense of say increasing a C grade student to an A grade student.

The calculation of the scores is a complex process with pupils’ individual A Level results being averaged and added to other calculations to give a base number around 1000. The Government guidelines suggest that any school with a score exceeding 1033 is in the top 5% nationally. These scores are shown below, but care should be taken in drawing conclusions and we suggest you consider them in conjunction with the other tables we publish. However, top schools in this table can be regarded as having added value to their pupils’ examination results by good teaching and pastoral care.

Note.1. Sometimes there are a few gaps in our data, because the information is not freely available or a school will not supply it. In general this applies to lower graded schools in the table. Sometimes grades improve as a result of appeals on exam results and we will update the data periodically. We encourage all schools to supply corrections or additions. We go to great lengths to gather all school exam results, whereas most of the tables you can see in British newspapers are missing more than 60 top schools. OURS ARE ACCURATE AND COMPREHENSIVE.

Note 2. Exam results are not the only criteria by which to judge a school. Indeed some of the top schools in our tables are quite selective on their admissions. Be aware your child may not necessarily thrive in a high pressure academic environment get bespoke advice from us.
